GLORIA TANCHELEV: The White Paintings 2015-19
The White Paintings reference Yves Klein’s installation of nothing at Galerie Iris Klert in Paris — to celebrate space and emptiness.
Measuring 60x60”, The White Paintings disappear into yet rhythmically mark the architectural volume of the white cube making a space of color, light and feeling.
Each White Painting is built of up to 60 layers of varied hue including titanium white. The underpainting telescopes up through the layers producing changing color and light. Through uncompromising surface the paintings reveal depth.
The color White is symbolic of signaling peace and functionally/ psychologically white deflects heat and hate.
